April Showers at the P.O.P.E.

Traffic jams, chilly rain and falling temps could not stop Publetters’ debut in South Philly at the Pub On Passyunk East.  The first letters were completed and stamped barely 30 minutes in; as we expected, there were two sincere letters to his Holiness Pope Francis. Will He Writeth Back? It has happened before! (Doobies Bar got a nice signed photo from The Pope, postmarked Vatican City)

While nearly a third of our 28 letters were staying inside city limits, we also wrote to friends and family way down in Dallas TX, way up in Cranston RI, and way over in Seattle WA. The Pope’s not the only one getting fan mail; we sent a note on posh stationery to the Screaming Females HQ in NJ. They will find it in a pile of mail after they get back from touring.

As always, PUBLETTERS is brought to you by Casa Papel and Trophy Bikes.  Need to write on something beautiful?–go for the former. Need to ride on something beautiful?–that would be the latter.

Next Publetters is Tuesday, April 14th, at P.O.P.E. (also April 21st & 28th)  Starts around 7 p.m. FREE

John Lennon’s Letter of Advice: for richer, or for poorer…

John Lennon read about a singer-songwriter saying that success would ruin his heart… he grabbed a pen and wrote this:

More Proof that LETTERS LAST

As you press SAVE on your computer, the question may nag, “Where am I saving to–and how?” Er, it’s in, or up there, somewhere, we hope.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has a nice story on how some letters were saved–the old-fashioned way.

A Strong Showing as Second Publetters finally catches Spring!

Call it a cross between March’s lion and lamb, call it early April showers. But whatever yesterday’s rainy weather might be called, it was vastly preferable to a week ago.  • • • We started right on time–in a real hurry (a dozen hand-written letters in just 30 minutes) the second Publetters at Taqueria Feliz in Manayunk was off and running.  By the end, we had 30 letters, addressed to places as close as Bala Cynwyd and as far-flung as Hermosa Beach CA. President Obama will get a letter detailing the ways that cutting funding for medical residents hurts patients, and a certain paper and stationery store owner will get a note from our youngest (age 6) Publetters writer ever.

WHEN THE CHIPS (AND SALSA) WERE DOWN, OUR PUBLETTER-WRITERS CAME THROUGH…!

In between placing stamps on letters, your Publetters host Mike tried out a fried grasshopper taco–which was good, but different. He’s feeling a bit jumpy this afternoon!  PLEASE JOIN US at Taqueria Feliz for any or all of the remaining Tuesdays in the lovely month of March (3/17, 3/24, 3/31) . We start our pens at 7 pm and go till about 9 p.m.

With Kind Regards,

— Nestor & Mike, your Publetters hosts.

WHAT SLUSH?

A sturdy handful of handwriters were on hand as Mother Nature gave a truly chilly reception to the first Publetters of March, which was also the first Publetters ever in Manayunk.

Our hosts yesterday (and for every Tuesday this month) were the lovely staff of Taqueria Feliz, 4410 Main Street. We produced a quite respectable-under-the-circumstances output: 13 letters clunked in to the mail box outside the U.S.Post Office just down the street.

Presenting a pair of the first letters produced that night.

Please join us next Tuesday, March 10th, where we will be ready to help you send some “Real Mail” — the kind people are glad to get.   Starts about 7 p.m., and it’s FREE, of course.

As spring waits in the wings, why not join us on Tuesdays (Feb. 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st) at TAQUERIA FELIZ in Manayunk?   They’re at 4410 Main St. , just a 5-min. walk from the SEPTA Regional Rail.   Great Margaritas and a choice selection of craft on draft to keep you hydrated while you write a letter or three; and seriously good tacos to help wash down that drink! Pub letters covered by STAR reporter!

Writer Melissa Komar stopped by the Standard Tap to report on Publetters at the Standard Tap; she really brought out some nuances and totally nailed the headline for her story: Letters Last , it declared. We agree.

Here’s the link to her story!

OK, just in case you didn’t click on that–

WE’RE MOVING/ (as we do every month). In March, we will be at Taqueria Feliz, 4410 Main St. in Manayunk,  every Tuesday night, starting March 3rd. (10th, 17th, 24th, 31st) . Goes 7 to 9 pm, FREE, of course.

Coming from Center City or University City?  Here’s the SEPTA Norristown Line Schedule–the Manayunk stop is just one block from the Taqueria!

12 Degrees=22 Letters!

…which is quite respectable for a flash-frozen PUBLETTERS at the Standard Tap. We sent letters to Pretoria, South Africa, Brentford and London in the U.K., down South to Jacksonville AL, as well as Minneapolis (currently downright balmy compared to Philly) and Shawnee, Oklahoma, to name a few. Will Neil Young play a wedding? We wrote him and asked him politely. Next Tuesday (2/24), please join us upstairs at the Standard Tap  for the last Publetters of February–and the last one in Northern Liberties–we move to Manayunk for March; details shortly (let’s just say it’s a bit South of the Border).
