Should Valentine’s Day be a MONTH? (discuss)

Valentine’s Day is Saturday–and good luck with all that.  We say it’s always best to have an Alternate Plan prepared; call it a Follow-Up if you like. That’s where we come in.  Join us on Tuesday, Feb. 17, upstairs at the Standard Tap for the Publetters Luvletters Edition. Whether you’re apologizing for how Valentine’s turned out, cranking the heat up a notch after a great V-Day, or just saying, “After 20 years, I still love making coffee for you…” We’ll help you put it in writing.LOVE3

We’ve got the crisp white paper, the bright red envelopes (thanks, Casa Papel)  and the sticky First-Class US Postal Service stamps (courtesy of Trophy Bikes) to make sure your message gets straight to the target. And we’ll have a very special thesaurus (a.k.a. THE WRITER’S SIDEKICK) to help you punch up your prose.  Starts about 7 p.m. at 2nd & Poplar Streets in Northern Liberties Philadelphia. FREE, of course.

Farewell to Strangeloves

Publetters host (and paper maven at Casa Papel) Nestor Torres peers over our final stack of handwritten mail from January at Strangeloves Bar in Wash West.

These letters are now all over the US, including sunny California!

These letters are now all over the US, including sunny California!

For February, we return to Northern Liberties and to one of the city’s best pubs–The Standard Tap, at 2nd and Poplar.

We’ll be there every Tuesday  (2/3, 10th, 17th & 24th) starting promptly at 7 p.m. in their fireplace-equpped second floor. Brave the chill and warm someone’s heart with a personal letter. FREE, of course, with stationery by Casa Papel and stamps courtesy of Trophy Bikes.

Cheers!  Mike and Nestor, your Publetters hosts.

We wrote to OHUMWA, Iowa, and NOLA –and PENNSAUKEN!

Last week’s Publetters upstairs at Strangeloves went swimmingly, and we added a slew of new cities to the list, including hard-working Pennsauken, NJ, and Hammonton–becoming known for its taco and burrito blocks!

flake          NOW, comes the question–will we have a Publetters show during the first really big snow of the year?  As of Sunday afternoon, we say YES, BUT–please do watch this website/Publetters on Facebook and before you head over, maybe call Strangeloves around 6 p.m. this Tuesday, 1/27.  215-873-0404.

We think hanging out in their cozy upstairs bar, watching the snow swirl, and writing letters to loved ones, might be a nice early evening out–if you’re nearby, or close to the Regional Rail/PATCO / subway lines, which generally work well here even in the snow.

Getting familiar at STRANGELOVES

Well, a private party upstairs and the resulting packed house made things a bit tight at first for our Publetters debut at Strangeloves, a nice bi-level bar on 11th St. between Walnut and Locust in Center City Philadelphia (BTW: it’s from the same people who bring you Local 44 and Memphis Taproom ). But Strangeloves’ ingenious staff managed to snag us a choice spot, and soon we were off to the races. We had a full table of repeat Publetters writers–but we also converted the tables on either side of us to letter writers in a sterling example of the rule: Proximity is Affinity, which we just invented.

At evening’s end, we headed to the mailbox with 28 letters to beautiful downtown Burbank CA, Ridley Park PA, Kennett Square PA, Medford NJ (birthplace of the zen-punk band RUIN), Vatican City, ITALY (yup, more mail for the Pope!) ,  and Wexford, IRELAND, among other destinations.

We’ve got two more Tuesdays this month at Strangeloves (Jan. 20th & 27th) ... Join us, why don’t you? We start at 7 p.m. and keep going till around 9 p.m., or till writer’s cramp sets in!

Cheers, Nestor (Casa Papel) and Mike (Trophy Bikes), your Publetters hosts.

PUBLETTERS stamps into ATLANTA, GA

We did a spur-of-the moment, ad hoc, maybe even off-the cuff Publetters at Meehan’s Downtown, a classic tavern just across the street from the America’s Mart — where the Gift Show is hosting a stack of greeting card companies and their reps.  A few hours, a few Guinness Stouts and a few dozen letters later, we said goodnight, but not without a picture, courtesy of greeting card maker and developer Andrew Meehan (no relation to the pub owners, but he wangled us a space there for the event!).  We’ll be back in Philadephia at Strangelove’s the next three Tuesdays, January 13th, 20th and 27th, starting at the crack of 7 p.m. each evening.

Cranking ’em out at the Standard Tap!

standardSTACK

An evening’s worth of holiday wishes for all !

Setting a new house record –we bundled up 54 hand-written, sincere letters by evening’s end, in the cozy second floor of the Standard Tap.  The fireplace was fully involved, and sweaters wound up draped all over the place as a bar full of scribes sent letters to Cambridge MA., Willow Grove, PA and to every single member of the Winters family.

CRANKINtap

The prose was flowing at the end of the bar.

All in all, an excellent showing for the penultimate Publetters of 2014.  Join us next Tuesday, Dec. 16, at FERGIE’S PUB, 1214 Sansom St., for the last Publetters this year. We will have all our first-name stamps on hand: Wilt, Ray, Jimi, Janis, Madonna and Rudolf–as well as stamps for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and a few other events!  7-9pm, and FREE, of course.   LOOKING AHEAD: PUBLETTERS returns to the Standard Tap for all of February, including Valentine’s Day, so brush up your Shakespeare. Where will we be in JANUARY, 2015?

An announcement will be made here shortly!

Thank you Philadelphia City Paper for the fresh ink!

Okay; following a great article in the Inquirer, we braced for the inevitable backlash–instead, there came another complimentary story in the Philadelphia City Paper. We will have some special holiday paper (from Casa Papel), and Xmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah stamps (courtesy of Trophy Bikes ) all ready for you.  Publetters is always free; just bring words.
