The calm before the clunk (of the mailbox door)

PADDYb&wHere’s a moment from last Tuesday’s Publetters at Paddy’s Pub… the real-world equivalent of pressing “SAVE” –when you fold up the page with your words written on it, slide it into the envelope, then seal it shut. Is this series of small tasks superior to the computerized sequence of non-events?  I maintain it is, by a mile.

••   Join us next Tuesday, Nov. 18th* for the penultimate Publetters of November at 228 Race St. (where it meets quiet, Belgium-blocked Bread Street), from 7-9 p.m.

 It’s FREE; just bring words.

— and again on Nov. 25th.  In December, Publetters will be at Doobies Bar on the 2nd, and upstairs at the Standard Tap on the 9th.

Oh, almost forgot THE STATS: 33 letters and postcards; We wrote to President Obama in D.C., Elena, way down in Baton Rouge, Pat out in Seattle, Steve in Wauwatosa, Wis., and a host of other friends and family in places with cozy-sounding names like Houtzdale (PA), Sicklerville (NJ) and Rehoboth (ME) — amazingly, it costs just 49 cents to have a government agent bring your letter to any of those exotic, easy-to-misspell locales!

JOIN US at Paddy’s Pub every Tuesday in November

We had a low-key opening at Paddy’s Pub on Nov. 4th, Election Day.  Yet, every single one* of the handful of people inside that cozy Old City bar participated and wrote a letter–compared to a 36% voter turnout in Tuesday’s elections.

We wrote to an imprisoned friend and to His Holiness Pope Francis; we almost wrote to someone’s exes down in Texas, but had second thoughts!

JOIN US again this coming Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Paddy’s, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. We’ll have posh stationery, First Class postage stamps, interesting-slash-notorious new people’s addresses on our “cheat sheet” and if you forget your pen, we’ll lend you one! Scroll down and see a brand new letter craftily made to look ancient.

* Yes, even our friendly bar maid took time to write--and then antique -- a letter.

On Election Day–you have a choice: Paddy’s or DOOBIES? Or both!

Our new bar for the month of November is PADDYS PUB, 228 Race Street in Old City.

Don't worry--there's a great selection of craft beers, as well as good old Miller!

Don’t worry–there’s a great selection of craft beers, as well as good old Miller!

Every Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting November 4th, we’ll gather there to write letters, enjoy some good beer, and get those letters stamped and mailed.

HOWEVER– Doobie’s Bar (birthplace of Publetters) holds their own letter-writing session on the first Tuesday of each month (i.e., Nov. 4th, Dec. 2, , Jan. 6th, 2015 , etc.). This means that this very Tuesday, you will have two Publetters to choose from: one at Doobies, 2201 Lombard, and one across town at Paddy’s Pub.  Both events go 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and both will feature lovely stationery from Casa Papel and first-class postage provided by Trophy Bikes.

The decision is yours; there will be great letter writing and fun at each location. Can’t decide? Start at the bar furthest from your house, then shoot across town on your bike or the bus and split your Publetters ticket! But first–VOTE!

TO REVIEW: Tuesday, 11/4 Publetters is at DOOBIES BAR–and– PADDYS Pub. From then on, Publetters is at Paddy’s Pub.

For the rest of November, Publetters is every Tuesday at Paddy’s Place– 11/11, 11/18 and 11/25.  Of course, it’s FREE.  Please like us on Facebook, follow us on WordPress, and above all, come on out and write a letter with us.

with Kind Regards,

Michael McGettigan and Nestor Torres, your Publetters hosts.

You face a dilemma on Tuesday, November 4th.

Publetters is leading a double life of sorts. The first Tuesday of each month, DOOBIES BAR (22 & Lombard) tosses a Publetters, complete with lovely stationery, stamps and drink specials. But we will also have a monthly residency at another bar, hosting a letter-writing session on every Tuesday of the November. This bar will be in Fairmount or Manayunk or South Philly–just about to figure it out. So on Tuesday, Nov. 4th, you will need to decide who you’re voting for, then which bar you are writing letters in. That’s Democracy!

TONIGHT, LET’S WRITE ON!

Doobies Bar was the er, “birthplace” of Publetters; they liked the idea so much that they hold a Publetters on the first Tuesday of every month–which means tonight, Oct. 7th, for example. Please swing by to write a lovely letter on crisp bond paper, using words like threnody, agog and athwart. Then seal it all up in an envelope, place a USPS stamp on it and put it on the stack of letters which we mail at the end of the affair–which when letters are concerned is just the beginning.

Stop by from 7-9 p.m. at 22nd and Lombard; it’s FREE.

With Kind Regards,

— Michael McGettigan and Nestor Torres, your Publetters hosts

P.S. –Can’t make it tonight? Doobies’ next 1st Tuesdays are 11/4 and 12/2. There will also be a “whole month of November Tuesdays” at a bar TBA. Watch this space!

PUBLETTERS closes out September at the Standard Tap

We finished up a lovely month of Publetters at the Standard Tap last night. Did we write to friends in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston and Austin? Why, yes, we did, as well as sending first class letters to WI, NY, CT, WV and DE !  ••  More than 100 letters went out from the Tap during the month and there’s a lot of happy Grandmoms and Omas out there, we can tell you. We also sent some love to WKDU “New Matt Show” over at Drexel University.    As always, our letters were written on fine stationery from Casa Papel and their stamps (1st Class, of course, that’s how we roll) provided by Trophy Bikes.

Here’s an end-of the-night letterstack–mailed before last call!

Because it was SAUSAGEFEST at the Tap, we also enjoyed some incredible food and German-accented brews to wash it all down with. You can still dig the S-Fest through this Thursday, 10/2 at the Tap. Bring some paper and compose your own private Publetters while you scarf down a Kaisekrainer!

WANT MORE PUBLETTERS?   Join us on Tues., 10/7, at Doobies, 22 & Lombard.          (7pm – 9 pm, FREE of course).  PUBLETTERS will be back every Tuesday in November– at a brand new bar–maybe in Manayunk, maybe in Fairmount?  Follow us here & like us on Facebook to stay in the loop!
